Last Hurrah premieres in Boston.
October 23, 1958
Directed by John Ford and adapted from the novel by Edwin O’Connor, the movie stars Spencer Tracy as a politician clearly modeled after James Michael Curley. Although filmed in Hollywood, the interior set of the mayor’s home is modeled after the Curley House – though an exterior shot seems to locate it at the corner of Charles Street and Beacon Street on Boston Common. O’Connor does not attend the event because he disapproved of the film after seeing a preview. Neither does Curley, who had sued to stop it from being shown and subsequently settled for a payment of $25,000 ($46,000-JPHS). Curley dies a few weeks later, while the film is still being screened in Boston.
